General Information
This page is dedicated to providing information that is particularly important for keeping and breeding reptiles. We have compiled these pages based on information that is commonly available on the internet and our own experiences in keeping and breeding reptiles. If you are considering purchasing your first reptile or want to know more about the reptiles you currently have, the information on these pages is an absolute necessity for you to read. These pages are not intended to be an exhaustive listing of information. Instead, these pages should serve as a starting point that you can use to glean basic information. I will post appropriate links where I can to provide further or more detailed information.
If you are considering purchasing a reptile you should do as much research as you can about the captive requirements for the species you are interested in. You should join a few of the reptile enthusiast websites, Faunaclassifieds and Kingsnake.com are two that will be a good start. You should ask questions in the forums on these websites to better educate yourself about reptiles in general and the species you are interested in. Once you have chosen a species you have two primary methods to purchase your new pet 1) online from reputable breeders or 2) at your local reptile show. You can have success using either of these methods as long as you know the right questions to ask. The basic set of questions you should ask are: what is this reptile feeding on (snakes - frozen thawed, fresh killed, live, mice, rats, etc., other reptiles - greens, crickets, mealworms, squash, etc.), how old is it and did you breed it yourself, what are its genetics (het. for albino, etc.), and is it a male or female. This list is by no means an exhaustive list but is meant to get the conversation between you and the seller started.
